Varicose Veins

What to do with those varicose veins? They can be a real problem and tend to get worse as time goes on, rather than better. I now have them myself – a sign of old age creeping on. I had never heard of men and varicose veins as a frequent combination before I, myuself, got them. Now I know there are many men with this affliction.

I remember my mother had them. I recall her legs being laced with swollen veins and discoloration. She complained of aching legs and tiredness especially when she had been on her feet for a while. The doctor recommended exercise and the use of compression stockings. It did not help.

She gradually deteriorated until the day arrived that she developed ulcers and thrombophebitis – first in the one leg then in the other. The nurse used to come and bandage them up. The nurses were very kind but my mother was in such pain. She eventually became virtually housebound – unable to walk very far and confined to the chair most of the time (including when sleeping).

This inactivity did her little in the way of good. She became depressed and needed treatment with antidepressants. They made her drowsy and weak. She had no interests and no life to speak of. She tried to keep cheerful but was riddled with pain and eventually anxiety. She became a shadow of her former self and all because of varicose veins.

So, now I have them too. Shall I have varicose vein surgery (not always successful I am told)? What are the treatment options for varicose veins? Shall I leave them and hope for the best. It would be nice to have some information on varicose veins to help me make a decision. This is a dilemma, but seeing what happened to my mother, I refuse to accept that varicose veins are a simple, non-complicated condition.
